RESOLUTIONS REACHED AT THE MEETING BETWEEN THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AND THE ORGANISED LABOUR HELD ON MONDAY 3RD JUNE, 2024 Further to the negotiation by the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage (NMW) and subsequent withdrawal of Labour from negotiation, the Leadership of the National Assembly intervened on 2nd June, 2024. The Organised Labour declared nationwide strike on Monday, 3rd June, 2024 to drive home its demands. 2. The Federal Government, in the National interest, convened a meeting with Labour held in the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, on Monday 3rd June, with a view to ending the strike action. 3. Muslims Must Shun to Labour Strike - MURIC

  The Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, has suggested that the ongoing strike by organized labour unions will make life unbearable for Muslims preparing for Id al-Kabir (Salah). MURIC, therefore, advised the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, to postpone its strike until after the Muslim festival. The group made the request on Monday in a statement signed by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola. Part of the statement read: “There is no scintilla of doubt that the strike will make life unbearable for Muslims preparing for Id al-Kabir (Salah) which is just a few days away. “As expected, the worker’s unions of other service-providing sectors like petroleum and electricity have offered to join. This means the lives of Nigerians are likely to be thrown into a state of higgledy-piggledy in the next few days. “But what does NLC think will happen to Muslims whose festival of Id al-Kabir is already knocking on the door? Strike: Entrance, Exit To National Assembly Blocked By PASAN Members

  Members of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress have laid siege to the entrance and exit of the National Assembly. Some of the workers who arrived early to monitor the compliance met the entrance and exit gates blocked with two coastal buses. The situation was not also different at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja, as our reporter observed that intending passengers travelling by air can no longer gain access to the airport, following a blockade by the striking workers. Recall that following failure to reach a compromise on a new minimum wage by the tripartite committee set up by the Federal Government, the organised labour comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress commenced a nationwide strike today. The development has already led to the shutdown of the national grid.
